In 'The Small House Half-Way Up in the Next
Block ...'
1932-1944
Created and
Written by Paul Rhymer
Originated out of NBC Radio's Chicago, Illinois
Studios
In a Time when we seem unable to rise
above our lowest common
denominators,
it is reassuring and elevating to
be able to listen to stories that reflect and
illustrate our highest common
denominators.
JVP>
Paul Rhymer,
Creator & Solo Writer of Vic
& Sade
Paul
Mills Rhymer was the creative
'genius' behind Vic & Sade.
He was
born [1905] in a small town in
the US midwest [Fulton, Illinois] and
grew-up in a larger, small town, Bloomington, which later became the
'template' for
the town portrayed in Vic &
Sade
~ known as Crooper,
Illinois.
After
having to leave Illinois Wesleyan University [with the
death of his
father] to
support his mother, Paul
worked on the
local railway line for a
while, before he landed a job on the Pantagraph,
the the local Bloomington
newspaper. He was fired from the paper when it
was found that he was not
only regularly fabricating interviews,
but also
was, on occasion, inventing
the people whom he purportedly interviewed. This was, no
doubt, a
harbinger
of literary things
to come!
As
an aside, one of the literary 'devices' Paul Rhymer used to great effect
was the invention of
unusual/bizarre
names for places, people and
organizations. A good example of the latter was the wonderfully
named
'fraternal organization' to which Vic was a
'distinguished/well-placed
member {Exalted Big Dipper,
in fact}- that being ~
the Drowsy Venus
Chapter of the Sacred
Stars of the
Milky Way!!
Anyway,
before long, Paul was
working
for NBC Radio (Chicago),
which
was, at the time, the heart of US radio. At first, he was writing
'continuity'
[introductions and breaks] for various radio programs and celebrities.
Then
in 1932, his idea for a program depicting the everyday life of a small
town
couple [the Gook's] was
accepted,
and, so, Vic
& Sade was born!
The Players ~ The
'Original' Gook Family
[Sade, Vic & Rush Gook]
Bernardine Flynn, Art Van Harvey
& Billy Idelson
For
the first few shows there were only two
characters, Vic & Sade,
but then
a third person was added, when the couple adopted a boy, Sade's
Sister's
Son, Rush ~ Victor Rush Meadows. This
threesome continued for about 10
years, and the program met with a great deal of success;
both in the writing
and the acting/performing.
By 1943, Vic & Sade was
regular-listening-fare for upwards of 7 million
people, per daily broadcast ~ a popularity which rivalled that of any
of
the
shows on radio at the time! During this time, 600 radio editors voted
Vic &
Sade as the 'Best Radio Serial'.
Paul
Rhymer was recognized early-on in
the shows run as a gifted writer
and was praised for the satire,
the poignancy and
even the absurdity
of
the
stories he penned. He seemed to be able to capture, in the simple story
lines,
depicting everyday living, the fundamentals of American family and
community life.
Years
later, authors as diverse as John
O'Hara and Ray Bradbury and
Ogden Nash and James Thurber (among others) spoke of the humor,
eloquence and real-life resonance
of Rhymer's stories. Some
[Nash and
O'Hara, in particular] would have asserted that a comparison with Mark
Twain or Charles Dickens would not have been an overstatement.
In all, Paul Rhymer wrote over 3500 Vic & Sade stories [with a
running
time of 9 plus - 13 plus minutes]~
producing one everyday, five days a week,
for 12 years. The stories were
stand-alone, for Vic & Sade
was no serial ~
more like 'self-contained vignettes'!
Taken together these scripts offer a glimpse
of a prodigious talent,
which
if it had been plied in such literary areas as
novels,
short stories, plays, or screenplays would have no doubt garnered a
great
deal more lasting recognition for the author.
Sadly, Paul Rhymer died in 1964 [at the
age of 59], but to this day there
are newly-minted-fans
being created all-the-time. It seems that the
stories
he wrote in another time, still attract peoples' attention, laughter
and tears.
If you ever lay your hands on one
of PaulRhymer's scripts, Read-It ..
Read-It Out Loud .. Read-It with
Gusto! and with the
recognition that
you are 'orally interpreting' a piece
of fiction that is
imbued, by the writer,
with all of the humor,
poignancy
and tedium of real life and
with the
intensity, frivolity and
idiosyncrasy of real
people.
Well. by golly, you do have a chance to
read a Vic & Sade Script
.. the
Link Below will
do-the-trick!!
Before TV and long before and
'Seinfeld',
there was this Guy writing
stories
in which 'nothing [much] happened', except Life and Living!
... with all of
its humor, poignancy and tedium!
The
Players
The Players ~ At Work, Again
with Paul Rhymer inthe Background
Little has been written about the Original Players'
acting careers prior to
their wonderful work on Vic
& Sade. Having said this, their individual
professional histories matter not-one-bit, because they seem to be the
characters
they are playing.
Each actor rings-so-true as the character they
are
portraying that one would expect that if you were to meet them on the
street,
they would be The
Gooks{!!} ~ Vic, Sade
and Rush!!
For his part Billy
Idelson literally grew-up on Vic
& Sade ~ going from a
9/10 year old boy to a military draftee [US Marine Corps Pilot] during
the
Second World War.
Suffice it to say, that Bernardine Flynn, Art Van Harvey &
Billy Idelson
consistently offered the Highest-Fidelity,
Stereophonic Renditions of Paul
Rhymer's Literary Folk
Songs!

Introductory Notes
The MP3
Audio File offered here contains three Vic
& Sade episodes; the
sound quality of which is sometimes a bit "ragged". I have chosen these
particular Programs because they demonstrate some of Paul Rhymer's
Scope -
the range of his story ideas and
content, the diversity of
emotions
felt/shown by his characters, and his ability to accurately
reflect/illustrate
his characters humanity
through the use of tempo,
intonation and
dialogue
alone.
As well, I have selected these three
Programs because they nicely show-off
the formidable acting talents
of all of the Original Players.
Program Highlights
The three Programs available here are ~
Sade Feels Pushed Around -
which highlights an emotion-charged
conversation between Sade
and Rush, after Sade was 'pushed-around'
(double meaning!) by a neighbor lady [Mis' Appelrot]. Rush tries to
console and support his mother, all the while knowing he is 'just a
kid'.
Rush's Business Scheme - which plays-out a conversation
between Rush
and Vic, regarding a
proposed business-{mis-}adventure that requires
Vic's
active assistance/involvement. You see, one of Rush's friends
[Milton Welch] is wanting to collect dirt [in jars] from all 48 US States,
and Rush conjures this
into a
'big' money-maker for himself!?!
Rush's Embarrassment - which
chronicles Rush's
expressions of anger
at a neighbor boy [Nicer
Scott .. who was hardly even nice!], who is his
perennial nemesis! This
show is punctuated by a number of
teasing phone
calls from Rush's
friends,{Paul Rhymer might
well have originated the one-
way telephone conversation[!!];
later used to great
effect by various stand-up
comics ~ Bob Newhart and Shelly Berman for two!}, by Vic's verbal
antics
and by Sade's
replies, retorts, admonishments and good-natured
advice.
This
show might well have been called 'Stuff
Happens' ...
Listen-for-it !!
I was originally going to
give an audio 'Introduction' to the Programs as a
whole, and then briefer 'Introductions' to each of the three Programs;
but, I
have decided to let the preceding Information serve that purpose,
too.
The Vic
& Sade Sampler Sound
File available below is in the initial form
of a Self-Extracting Execution

Directory of your choice;
from which you can Access and Play

Please be Patient ~ the Vic

Audio] and, depending on your Internet Access Type, may take some time
to
complete!
We
hope you Enjoy this, our
