What is BMI?
BMI stands for 'Body Mass Index'. It was
invented/created by Belgian, Adolphe
Quetelet. The main purporse of BMI
is to give a quick, simply to understand measure
of body compositon, wether you are underweight, overweight or in
normal. BMI index
was quickly adopted by many and today it is widely used by both
physicians and
dietitians to judge body composition. However, BMI is not and was never meant
to
replace examination and diagnosis. In that respect it can
be used only as a starting
point - simply to tell you if should you be concerned
about your body fat levels and
look to your physician for further consultation and advice.
BMI is a reliable indicator of
total body fat, which is often related to the risk of
disease and death. BMI can
be used by both woman and man, but it does have some
limitations~
* For people who are
muscular, like body builders or the naturally muscular,
BMI can
overestimate body fat levels.
* For people who are
slender, lightweight boned, or older, it can underestimate
levels of
body fat.
